Mixtape #22

Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Here we are with the 22th edition of loverswhoareseekers mixtape, to make a good start of the last trimester (yeah, time's passing by way too fast, I know) of this turbulent year of 2013.
This time, we collected 13 songs ranging from the usual Shoegaze and Noise Pop we all love so much to the lo-fi, Electronica, Neo-psychedelia and even Coldwave spheres, featuring classic oldschool artists such as Seefeel, which opens the mixtape with the track Plainsong (taken from the classic '93 Quique), Lush (with the song Downer, taken from the Gaia compilation), Kitchens of Distinction (Drive That Fast), Sweet Jesus (criminally underrated first-generation gazers, here featured by the song Honey Loving Honey), Smashing Orange (a perfect combination of Grunge and Gaze, with the song Cherry Rider), besides another sadly under-appreciated old times act, Revolver, whose chosen song is Molasses, taken from their great '92 compilation of early singles called Baby's Angry. Also usual, there's also space for brand new tunes and newsomcers, as Flying Low, one of the songs by the brand, shining latest Mazzy Star album, as well as lo-fi-esque noise poppers of Gauntlet Hair, the melting psychedelia of Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, the "tropical goth" gloominess of White Hex, the relaxing chillwave of Washed Out, and, finally, the Sonic Youth's apprentices' Grooms, here featured with Prom.

That's probably the most diversified mixtape I've made so far. As usual, I hope you enjoy it and have a great October! ;)

Mixtape #21

Hello, ladies, gentlemen and aliens! The mixtape #21 of our cherished blog has "EP-exclusive songs" as its theme. Yeah, that means it features only songs released exclusively on EPs. For the newbies or those who were in coma in the last 20 ~25 years or so, most Shoegaze/Dream Pop bands (specially the oldschool ones) used to release most of their material on countless strings of EPs, where some of their brightest material can be found. In this mixtape, we've picked one song from some of the finest mini-albums of this blissful soundsphere, ranging from eternal classics such as Love's Easy Tears, the 1986 EP from Cocteau Twins, Curve stellar first EP, the 1991's Blindfold, as well as the laid-back psychedelica of Mesmerise EP (Chapterhouse) and the oneiric electronica of 5 EP from Slowdive. Besides, there are also new material as tracks collected from the majestic Airiel's 2012 EP called Kid Games, Whirr's 2013 EP Around and Blush, the latest EP from the scottish fuzzy assemble called The Cherry Wave. Some deeply obscure material were included as usual, e.g. Have You Heard EP by Headtime (an extremly -and criminally- unknown act from the same label of Chapterhouse, Cherry Red), Playtime EP from Sunshot, besides the phillipino Moscow Olympics, featured by the beautiful piece of Dream Pop-meeting-Post Rock song called Still.

As usual, the full tracklist and the download link can be found right below. Let's raise our gazes and ride the noisewaves into the spirals of inifity! ;)

Mixtape #20 - How To Seek Love

Hello, my dear friends!

July, 23 was loverswhoareseekers first anniversary, and since then I've been preparing a special edition mixtape to celebrate it. I know, I know, there's been two weeks since then and I'm late in a Kevin Shields-style, but better late than never, as the old people usually say (the new MBV album is a great example of this). Ok, let's talk about the mixtape itself. It's a double-edition one, consisting of 30 songs instead of the traditional 13-16 compilation we usually do. However, we didn't escape the tradition of mixing classic stuff (represented by Slowdive, Swallow, Moose, Secret Shine) with forgotten but precious rarities (as the 4AD's Insides, the japanese "madchesters" of Flipper's Guitar, the grungy Nudeswirl, the psychedelic fuzzy stoners of Sun Dial and the woozy The Lassie Foundation), brazilian goods (as the classic Low Dream, who are reuniting to some live concerts, beside the amazing newcomers of The Sorry Shop). Talking about newcomers, they are exactly the focus here. Why? Just take a look around (figuretively, of course), and you'll notice tons of great artists appearing every day. Although the magic of the late '80-early '90 may never be recovered in its truest sense, they honour those times with great quality and some innovation that gives a fresh bright to its already incandescent sound. I selected Screen Vinyl Image, Wild Nothing, Airling, Fleeting Joys, No Joy, Yuck, Sounds Of Sputnik, among many others, to represent this front.

I know that, by now, you all must be drooling to give it a listen. The link for the collection can be found right below, as well as the full tracklist of the artists and songs featured in this cherished collection we prepared. That's it, folks. I hope you enjoy it, and never forget to seek love and gaze at your shoes! ;)
ps: A great thanks goes to Louise Trehy, for gently conceding me the song Heavenly, from the time she was still with Swallow. :)

Mixtape #19 - The Stars That Hang Above Us

After two mixtapeless months (the last one was posted April 30th, exactly two months ago!), I apologize for that, yaddayadda. You all know I'm sorry and didn't forget our traditon, I just wasn't able to keep it running as I wished. Well, apologies accepted, let's talk about the 19th edition of loverswhoareseekers mixtape. This time, there's no specific theme for that but the love of fuzz, feedback and sugared dreams feeding our minds with pure sonic bliss. As usual, I tried to make a mix between classic and recent pieces, ranging from famous to obscure acts, and from Shoegaze in its most "purist" sense to Dream Pop, Ambient, Post-Rock, or anything Alternative-related. While the classic side is starred by Catherine Wheel, Swervedriver, Medicine, the newcomers are represented by the forces of jesu, DIIV, Wild Nothing. Besides, we also feature a song from some cult guys like the kiwi Bailter Space, with the song I.C.Y., besides the japanese gazers of Sugar Plant. To the end, there's an unexpected participant in this edition: Here Come The Warm Jets, from the early work of Brian Eno solo. Although this material was written over 40 years ago, you'll see why it's featured in a Shoegaze-based mixtape. He was antecipating what we'd all know and appreciate many years later, as a truly avantgarde artist he is.

Ok, I talked too much already. Just click in the link below and enjoy the trip! ;)

tracklist:

Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic
Wild Nothing - Drifter
Bailter Space - I.C.Y.
jesu - The Stars That Hang Above Us
Curve - Hung Up
DIIV - Wait
The Bilinda Butchers - Half Open
Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets
Swervedriver - Up From The Sea
Sugar Plant - Brazil
Seefeel - Polyfusion

Mixtape #15 - Stargazers never die

Hi, fellas!

Yeah, it didn't take so long for a new mixtape, did it? This time, we present a collection of 13 songs capturing the best oneiric and celestial Shoegaze out there. As usual, we made a amalgamation of classics, now represented by the forces of Slowdive, MBV, Robin Guthrie solo, with new guys looking for their place under the sun, such as Malory, Ummagma and the cosmic post-rockers of God is an Astronaut. Finally, there is also room for obscure gazers who were sadly forgotten amidst the stellar dust, as the likes of Once Dreamt and Swallow, both already featured in this page.

So, there you have a perfect description to escape the Earth's gravitational field and venture into the deep space domains, riding comets, sleeping in molecular clouds and gazing at the old light of untouchable stars. Just buckle up and enjoy the (eternal) trip!

Mixtape #14 - Never Lose That Feeling

Hello, people!

This time, I took a bit longer to create a new mixtape, and I apologize for that. But, ok, let's go straight to the point. The 14th mixtape from loverswhoareseekers does not have a specific theme, only the love for noise, feedback and gazing at your shoes (or barefoot, if that's the case). Therefore, I compiled 15 songs, which totalizes about 65 minutes, ranging from absolute classic tunes from Cocteau Twins,  Slowdive, Medicine and Kitchens of Distinction (I never put them on our mixtapes, didn't I? Shame on me!) to new effervescent bands such as Yuck, The History Of Apple Pie and Ringo Deathstarr, as well as some bands "stuck in between" of both "categories", as the likes of Malory, Astrobrite, lovesliecrushing and the brazilian Sonic Disruptor.

That's it, guys. Never forget to worship the fuzz and to lose that feeling!

Tracklist:

Kitchens of Distinction - Sand On Fire
Medicine - Never Click
Astrobrite - Overdriver
Yuck - Coconut Bible
MBV - In Another Way
Sonic Disruptor - Plastic Sunny Car
Ringo Deathstarr - Tambourine Girl
Slowdive - Slowdive
The History Of Apple Pie - Tug

Mixtape #13

Hello, fellas! After almost one month without mixtaping, there we have our 13th edition (nothing better to start 2013 with a 13th mixtape, huh? But this pattern will be broken, as we won't have the 14th on 2014...). Instead of focusing on the Shoegaze and Dream Pop we all love so much, this time I shifted to the (even more) lysergic side of the force. Mixtape #13 consists in a collection of 11 sonic pulsars featuring the best of nowadays psychedelic masters, as the likes of texans The Black Angels (I had the chance to see them live at late 2011, pure awesomeness), the stellar The Cosmic Dead, the kinda-occultism lysergy of Dead Skeletons, the Lovecraftian fuzz of Dead Meadow (yeah, these guys love to put "Dead" on their band names), the Desert Rock veterans of Yawning Man, the Joy Division (on a tank of acid) meeting Velvet Underground's Blue Angel Lounge and, of course, the already-classic BJM, besides other extremly talented guys.

Therefore, we have over an hour of brain-melting surrealism, cosmic exploration of otherwordly dimensions and a dinner with chimaeric creatures. Just buckle up and enjoy the (bad?) trip. :)

Tracklist:

Asteroid #4 - My Love
The Black Angels - Entrance Song
The Cosmic Dead - Spice Melange Spectrum
Tweak Bird - Sky Ride
The Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound - D Brown
Dead Skeletons - Om Mani Peme Hung
My Sleeping Karma - Shiva
The Blue Angel Lounge - LSD And The Search For God
BJM - Just Like Kicking Jesus

Mixtape #12 - Best of 2012

Hello, everyone!

Yeah, you aren't with any sight problem or stuff like that. That's the second post of today, the second about mixtapes. This time, we prepared something quite different. Instead of focusing on a theme, a musical genre or something in this vein, we compiled some of the 2012 songs we, Carlos and Paloma, enjoyed the most, on anything related to Shoegaze, Noise Pop, Dream Pop, Alternative Rock and etc.

That wasn't an easy selection, since there were tons of good stuff going on in this interval of (almost) 366 days, but we condensed it to about 38 tracks, divided into two albums. The first one contains really fine music such as The Soft Moon, Teen, Tamaryn, Hypomanie and the brazucas from Sobre A Máquina and This Lonely Crowd (all of them featured in this blog, just to mention it...), featured along BJM, Wild Nothing and A Place To Bury Strangers, whereas the second part of this mxt has equally awesome music, e.g. Alcest, Diiv, The Bilinda Butchers, Les Discrets, Broken Water, Efterklang, and the list goes on...

Therefore, a complete tracklist of these collections (besides the links for them, of course...) can be found right below. The loverswhoareseekers staff, Carlos and Paloma, wish you all a happy 2013 with myriads of awesome music, gigs, festivals, etc. to come! ;)

Mixtape #11 - Blackgaze

Yellow!

This is our mixtape #11, and it is all about Blackgaze, kinda modern idea, which I presume you already know... Basically, it consists on a blend between the grim world of Black Metal in its best shape with the dreamy and etherial atmospheres of Shoegaze and Post-Rock.

We have compiled the main bands which some of them are widely known for this mix of sounds - heavy and shrieked vocals, blast beat drumming plus that marvellous shoegazer guitars we are familiar with. The themes are the same old yadda yadda whining about depression, desolation, suicide, nostalgy, exaltation of nature, etc. However, we have focused on the most shoegazing songs, after all, that's what we like, huh.

So, our tracklist ranges from the already-classics of the genre, namely Les Discrets, Alcest and Amesoeurs, to newcoming talented people like the latvian Sun Devoured Earth, the dutch Hypomanie (already featured in this blog here), the yankee Airs and the aussie Lunaire. At the end, we have 12 songs which totalize 70 minutes of pure musical bliss. Finally, I drop the link to download it right below, hoping you enjoy it!

Cheers,
Paloma and Carlos

Mixtape #10 - Girls and Synths

Sup, mates!

Our mixtape #10 is a bit different from what we've been bringing so far. It's much more electronic, but we're not trying to make you shake your booty on the dancefloor, mind you,it's a chilling kind of electronic which I cannot discern or label accurately (I suck big time at that). The songs I selected fit well whatever the occasion is, nice huh? There you go, first track you got Au Palais, and their track Because The Night, and this one is really exciting, it might make you even dance, if you allow yourself. But the following tracks are smoother, like Changelings, by Gazelle Twin, that is something like Fever Ray with Liz Fraser on vocals. We also have Fever Ray, with Coconut, Alligator Indian, a kinda new and DOPE lo-fi post-whatever duet, but you guys might already know cause we've put them in some previous mixtape. Then it's time to some Grimes, a more psychedelic and experimental electronic artist, her track Devon is so dreamy, a sort of electronic Cocteau Twins. I also put Lower Dens and their track Lamb, they came with a more electronic approach in their last album, and as captivating as usual, just like everything they do! The last two tracks are Lick The Palm Of The Burning Handshake, by Zola Jesus, I bet you already know her cause she's quite popular among the hipstas :P and The Heavens Turn By Themselves by Sleep ∞ Over, a very etherial track that make a perfect closure for this mixtape. And that's it, by the time you finish listening to it, you'll be relaxed, asking to marilize legajuana. Sorry for that, the heat of Rio is melting my brains already.

 Cheers!
 Paloma.

Mixtape #9 - SUPERBLAST!

After some delay (there was a stream of holidays here in terra brasilis and I decided to take a trip to see my blog partner for a few days, you know...) ,  and over a month after Mixtape #8, we come back with a new one. This time, we did something different. I think we dropped our head and decided not to make a selection of 10 to 15 songs with a specific theme, but one hundred songs. YES, 100 SONGS, it's not a misprint!

About this superblast compilation, we reunited 100 songs with no specific theme besides the noise worshipping we all do and love, ranging from absolute classics such as My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver, Lush, The Telescopes, highly influential acts like The Breeders and Sonic Youth, underrated and underappreciated people like A.R. Kane, Blind Mr. Jones, Medicine, Bailter Space (some of them were featured here in previous mixtapes or a complete thread), brazilian talents in the likes of Second Come, Wry, This Lonely Crowd, and of course, talented newcoming like Sleep Party People, Teen Daze, Ringo Deathstarr, 93MillionMilesFromTheSun, Stellarium, and so forth.

So, right below you have a 4shared link for this compilation. As you imagine, it is a very huge file, almost 900 MB, which will scare many of you. But I assure you it is more than worthy the waste of your bandwidth connection.

Correction 1: The song #008 is from Skywave. I forgot to write the band's name.

Correction 2: The song #043 is from Skylight, not Skywave. Bad bad typo.

Mixtape #8 - Noisy songs for us rejects

Hello, guys!

This brand new mixtape is somewhat different from anything we did before when it comes to compiling songs. I was just scrolling down my music folder and saw a lot of stuff I didn't know or wasn't able to remember how it sounds like, so I just put them in my media player and gave them a listen. I realized immediatly that I have some long-forgotten gems in my playlist, so I quickly thought, "why not creating a mixtape with them?", and here it is, 14 songs composed of deeply obscure acts dedicated to Shoegaze, Noise Pop, Dream Pop and all its variations, as the Grunge-fueled Shoegaze of Smashing Orange, the sweeetness of Velocity Girl (for anyone into Lush, they're pure cream) and Swoon 23 (criminally underrated act that is mandatory for anyone into Slowdive and Cocteau Twins), Blind Mr. Jones with a flute-based (yes, flute!) Dream Pop-esque sound, the orientals gazers Astreal (Singapore) and Hartfield (Japan), the newcomers The Sunshine Factory and The Cherry Wave, just to give you a "small" sample.

All this underappreacited stuff makes me wonder why such bands are just sadly forgotten by almost everyone and shitty bands receive all kinds of praise and acclamation. Life is not fair, as everyone older than 5-6 years old know, and quantifying the reasons why didn't any of them become big or at least drew some cult following is a impossible mission, but, well, why not giving them space here and do my part of spreading their names as far as I can?

So, here they are. Just drown into the fuzz madness and have some fun!

Velocity Girl - Copacetic
The Sunshine Factory - Head Becomes The Tomb
LSD And The Search For God - Starshine
A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Shy
Blind Mr. Jones - One Watt Before Darkness
Lilys - Black Carpet Magic
Astreal - Blush Response
Starflyer 59 - Hazel Wound
Glifted - Last In Line
Swoon 23 - Lunatic
Smashing Orange - Remember Kendra
The Cherry Wave - Godzillabloom
Hartfield - True Color
The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa - Swoony

Mixtape #7 - The Subway Songs

Hello, travelers and gazers. It's been over a month since the last two mixtapes, way too long, to say the least, but here we are. This time, me and Paloma created a mixtape together, whose theme is about the songs and bands that capture the grey-ish, concrete-painted landscapes of the subways that many of us ride everyday to go to our work, college, school, friend's home or whenever. I know many people really dislike this, after all, we all relate subways to those crowded, sweat-soaked places, rush hour, and all those unpleasant problems big cities around the world face, with the remark that we can't even have a nice landscape outside to look at, only those never-ending walls and tunnels. However, I think there's a sort of bleak poetics concealed between the railways, which can be enjoyed in an appropriated mood.

At the end, we compiled fifteen songs we think that fit this atmosphere pretty well, and that are also capable to relieve those stressful days at crowded wagons. There's a larger amount of late gems of the Shoegaze-and-peripheries realms, for example: Lower Dens, Deerhunter, Exitmusic, Motorama, Blouse, but, of course, there are still room for those classic people we always love and enjoy, like the good ol' Joy Division and the already-became-classic Fever Ray. At the end, we have approximately an hour of pure cosmopolitan bliss.

That's it, guys. Enjoy it well!

#Mixtape #7 tracklist:

Deerhunter - Desire Lines
KVB - Dreams
Be Forest - NTR
Belong - Perfect Life
Lower Dens - Brains
Motorama - Ghosts

Twin Shadow - When The Movie's Over
Blouse - Ghost Dream
Skywave - Don't Say Slow

Mixtape #6 - Dreams gone dark

Yep, there's a new mixtape here, the sixth of ours the second today! This time, I decided to put more Post-punk, Gothic Rock and Darkwave in the blender. But, of course, there is still place for Dream Pop and our beloved shoes! (at least the darkest of them). As usual, new bands are featured (Blouse,  A Place to Bury Strangers, Fever Ray) along with classical acts (Cocteau Twins, JAMC, and the french coldwavers Asylum Party). At the end, we have about an hour (a bit more, to be more precise) full of dark treasures that will make yer dreams go hazy and lush.

Mixtape #5 - Brazilian Shoes

Nearly half a month after the mixtape #4, we decided to bring us a new one. This time I chose national (brazilian) bands, ranging from brand new, fresh upcoming people (Loomer, Flowed, This Lonely Crowd, Lê Almeida, Sobre a Máquina, just to name a few) to oldschool underground acts, for example Second Come, Killing Chainsaw and The Pin Ups.

That's my humble sample of the blooming scene of "Brasil", not only the current but the classical ones, at times when things were even harder and there was no such web resources like this one to help spreading good, obscure music around. I drop the link right below the tracklist, together with a nice picture of a typical brazilian shoe (actually a flip-flop...).

Mixtape #4 - Fuzz Pandemonium

Hello guys! I know, I know, we were a bit away during this week, although not as much as the last one. Paloma has just recovered her internet access, and I had a tough week, as usual. But here we are! And me, Carlos, decided to make a new mixtape for you. ;)

This time, I made a simple but careful selection of sixteen noisy and incandescent Supernovae, those that make you bang your head (or just thrash your body) like crazy or elevate you into a higher plane of consciousness, in total detachment and mesmerizement. In my humble opinion, it's a great compilation for many purposes, since the simple activity of reading and studying from going to a night club. There are some seminal classics of the Shoegaze universe (the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Telescopes), lost old school gems (Drop Nineteens, Love Battery) and upcoming talented acts, such as the brazilian Loomer, the texans of Ringo Deathstarr (both will play in the Popfestival, at São Paulo next week) and some sadly unknown people, e.g. the japanese Fuzzass and the scandinavian Maribel (maybe you'll hear more of them very soon in this space. Just stay tuned... :P ).

Well, I just hope you guys enjoy this one as much as the former mixtapes. Cheers! ;)

mixtape #4 tracklist:

Curve - Galaxy
Drop Nineteens - Delaware
The Breeders - Cannonball
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Just Out Of Reach
My Bloody Valentine - Swallow
Medicine - Aruca
Love Battery - Between The Eyes
Astrobrite - Crasher
Ringo Deathstarr - Starrsha
Loomer - Rocket Fuzz
Maribel - Deflowers
Fuzzass - Bottled Fog
Stellarium - Harbinger
Swervedriver - For Seeking Heart
The Telescopes - Suffercation
Slowdive - Shine

Mixtape #3 - Nyx

Hey guys!

I present you Nyx,our third mixtape. This one contains songs which are perfect to listen at night, and Im pretty sure it will provide you nice dreams :)
The first track, "All you are going to want to do is get back there" by The Caretaker has an amazing ethereal atmosphere and it will work as a stargate to another dimension taking you outta here immediately (I can't help imagining myself entering a hotel full of ghosts and furtive creatures where an old record has been kept playing for the last ceturies nonstop).
Nyx will make you float in space chasing stars with Scarlet Chives (the vocalist's voice is so similar to Liz Fraser's!), Beach House, Still Corners,Grouper, Boy Friend, Sleep ∞ Over. You'll also fall into a blackholes dug by moles with "Hole" by Mercury Rev and hear singing ghosts with Auburn Lull. I can also predict that you'll plunge and drown into deep waters as soon as you listen to Caveman and Benoît Pioulard (I don't know why,but these last ones make me think of water,of listening to the sound of water dropping, ya know? And since water symbolizes life and motion, well, let us drown.Yeah, I do trip balls!)

I hope you enjoy it!

Much love,

Paloma.

Mixtape #2 - Raise your gaze!

Sup guys! Paloma here.

This is my first contribution, and with much endearment I present you this mixtape containing tracks that will help you through your day, be it just to help you focusing, or helping you to get out this dull dimension we orbit. Well, there you will find classic bands such as Chapterhouse and their uplifting "Pearl", My Bloody Valentine and their "Lose My Breath" which I imagine to be a hell of a good song to listen to while ~~le sexy tiem~~ You will also find some really new shoegaze acts such as Ringo Deathstarr and Tamaryn. But my favorite 'nugaze' band I can say it is Youngteam. They are fresh but at the same time they have that late 80's/early 90's atmosphere.
I suck at descriptions,I beg your pardon , but my love for music is genuine and it is a great pleasure to share good music with you special people :)
